It had been a long several months. First, she was sent to Los Angeles on a mission to help Sousa, which spiraled into probably the most bizarre chain of events she had ever seen - and that was saying something for Peggy. Even months later, it was still was a struggle to get her mind around, and it didn't get much better right away.
It was pure chance that Sousa had gone to Thompson's hotel room that day. If he hadn't? Heaven knows what might have happened to the Chief of the New York SSR department. As it was, he was gravely injured, leaving the New York office without a leader.
As much as Peggy wanted to stay, as much as she loved that she finally was letting herself be happy again, she knew protecting her country was more important. As she got on the plane to fly back to New York, she promised she would write plenty to Sousa, Jarvis, and even Wilkes. Maybe their spark didn't pan out, but she had enjoyed making a new friend and she intended to keep in touch. As for Sousa... they decide to wait until they could be reunited again before pursuing anything between them, though she doubted there was anyone except maybe Steve Rogers that could dissuade her growing feelings for him.
But everything was a mess, on both sides of the country. Masters had tried to take over the LA side, and Thompson, was... well, Thompson. Picking up the pieces while he clung to life wasn't easy. They may not have always seen eye to eye, but she still thought highly of him, even if she rarely agreed with his way to go about things. She wanted to do everything possible to make the SSR even better than she got it, since she didn't know if she'd have such a chance again. Honestly, it was such a surreal honor to even have the role as Interim.
Moving back in with Angie was nice, and as the weeks went on, she felt like she was finally falling into a good place. She was loving her new role, she just had no idea that everything was about to change for her forever.
